I Come From Red Orange Dirt
A personal research into my own heritage and connection to food

Sashiko embroidery, burlap coffee bag, and fire mended onto photos;
All photos come from my great grandpa's personal archive.
The photos are of my relatives when they had just immigrated to Brazil and were forced to work in coffee farms before they could become free immigrants. Sashiko is a traditional Japanese stitching which my grandma learned from her grandma and in turn taught me.
The book was made for the exhibition by the Vancouver Ceramics Studio - Reclaim - in September 2025. It was bonded with home made rice glue, another experiment as a form of research and connection to my ancestry.
